Schumann - Piano Quintet Op. 44
In the piano quintet genre, this work by Robert Schumann deserves separate mention. With the exception of a piano quartet, the German composer had not finished a single chamber piece before 1842. During this 'chamber music year' he changed the trend: he composed three string quartets and, finally, decided to complement the string quartet - the typical cast in chamber music - with 'his' instrument, the piano. Consequently, he was one of the first to compose a piano quintet and he inspired composers like Brahms Dvorák and Shostakovich to follow in his footsteps. Renaud Capuçon, Sayaka Shoji, Lars Anders Tomter and Mischa Maisky perform Schumann’s beautiful Piano Quintet.
