Liszt - Après une lecture de Dante
The ‘Dante Sonata’ forms part of the second installment of Franz Liszt’s ‘Années de pèlerinage’, a musical journey accompanying the composer’s travels with his beloved Marie d’Agoult. Where the first set focused on describing natural scenery, the pieces in this second describe the artworks Liszt discovers. This sonata was inspired by the composer’s reading of the French poet Victor Hugo and shows his skill at evoking a gloomy, doom-laden atmosphere. The longest piece in the ‘Années de pèlerinage’, it drowns its isolated moments of loveliness in a sea of dolor and darkness.
