Massenet - Meditation from 'Thaïs'
Jules Massenet was one of the most celebrated opera composers of his day, which earned him much money and fame. Nowadays, he is most remembered because of his operas Manon and Werther, and of course this violin solo from his opera Thäis. Thaïs tells the story of the monk Athanaël who is obsessed by the beautiful courtesan Thaïs. He wants to convert her to Christianity, but at the moment he succeeds he realises he is losing the one he loves. This beautiful ‘Meditation’ belongs to the musical intermezzo in the second act. Jansen performs the Meditation from Thaïs together with Neeme Järvi and the Berliner Philharmoniker.
